Grand Rapids Christian secured a 59-45 victory over the Godwin Heights Wolverines in Wednesday’s district semifinal, punching their ticket to the district championship on Friday.
The Eagles came out with some early nerves in the 1st quarter, but once they settled in offensively, they found their rhythm. The opening period remained tight, with the Eagles taking a 15-12 lead into the 2nd quarter. Both teams battled through the quarter, with the Wolverines edging out the quarter, but Grand Rapids Christian maintained a slim 27-25 lead at halftime.
The 3rd quarter proved to be the turning point. The Eagles locked in defensively, holding Godwin Heights to just 7 points while executing efficiently on offense. Their defensive intensity set the tone, creating transition opportunities and allowing them to pull away. A 19-point 3rd quarter gave the Eagles a 46-32 advantage heading into the final quarter. While the Wolverines continued to fight in the 4th quarter, the Eagles controlled the game down the stretch. Though they didn’t play their sharpest basketball in the closing minutes, they secured the 59-45 win, advancing to the district finals.
Senior Tyler Davis led the way with 17 points, followed by Carl Thompson with 16, Braylon Taylor adding 10, and Connor Johnson contributing 7. Now, the focus shifts to Friday night, where we have an opportunity to compete for a district championship.
