The Grand Rapids Christian Eagles took to the field Monday night. They secured a strong 11-6 win over the Grand Haven Buccaneers, thanks to an explosive offensive effort and a disciplined defensive performance.
The Eagles started strong with early goals from Maddox Veldkamp and Hannah Kits in the first quarter, setting the tone for the evening. The second quarter proved to be an offensive showcase for Grand Rapids Christian, with Piper Slagboom netting two goals, and additional goals coming from Lila Jabara and Grace Kelder.
In the third quarter, the Eagles’ offense slowed, managing just one goal—Veldkamp’s second of the night—but the defense held strong to limit Grand Haven’s scoring chances. The Eagles regained momentum in the fourth, with Veldkamp adding two more goals to finish with four total, while Kits scored her second to seal the victory.
Offensively, the Eagles generated numerous scoring opportunities, aided by assists from Esther Kissinger, Chloe Pegman, and Grace Kelder. On the defensive side, the Eagles were relentless, holding the Buccaneers to just six goals. Goalie Glory Afolabi anchored the defense with nine saves, while Slagboom and Rachel Waters led the team in caused turnovers.
A key to the Eagles’ success was their dominance on the draw. The draw control unit—Slagboom, Veldkamp, and Kelder—worked cohesively to win 18 of 20 draws, providing a steady flow of possession that fueled the offense.
The Eagles look to keep the momentum going as they prepare to face the Grandville Bulldogs on Wednesday night at 5 PM.
