Grand Rapids Christian closed Conference play on Tuesday night with a strong showing, treating the home crowd to a 3-0 record for the evening. Sandwiched between victories over East Grand Rapids (25-10, 25-23) and Thornapple Kellogg (25-6, 25-13), the night was highlighted by a thrilling 3-set victory over Forest Hills Eastern - currently the 3rd ranked team in the state for Division 2. In that match, the Eagles came out strong and took the opening set 25-22. The Hawks responded with a 25-22 win of their own in set 2, setting up a winner-take-all set 3: Grand Rapids Christian rose the the occasion, closing out FHE 15-9 with some of their strongest play of the year. After a slow start to the season (4-8 overall, 1-5 conference), the young Eagles team has shown tremendous growth and resilience, winning 7 of their last 8 to finish the regular season at 11-9 overall, 5-5 in the GR South Conference. In their most balanced offensive attack of the season so far, Tommie Anderson led the Eagles with 7 kills, and Willem Gronsman provided a strong all-around performance with 4 kills, 5 aces, 6 digs, and strong serve receive play. Grand Rapids Christian's postseason begins next Wednesday (5/17) with a rematch against Forest Hills Eastern in the District Playoffs.
